Panchayat elections have been declared at vacant Jammu and Kashmir seats. The panchayat elections will take place in March even as top Jammu and Kashmir leaders, including three former chief ministers, are in jail for more than six months.
About 60 percent of Kashmir’s total panchayat seats remained vacant even after the last panchayat elections due to a lack of involvement in the election process. Such empty seats are now being filled in.
The announcement was made by J&K Chief Electoral Officer Shailendra Kumar on Thursday and the dates for the panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir are set. The elections to the panchayat will be held in March in 8 phases.
The 8 polling phases are to be observed on 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 March. The first notice will be given for the procedure on 15 February.
