Joaquin Phoenix has won the Best Actor award for Todd Phillips-directed Joker at the 92nd Academy Awards. Renee Zellweger won the Best Actress Award for Judy.
This is the fourth nomination for Phoenix and the first Oscar win. The actor spoke of animal cruelty and world peace in his address. He said, “The blessing I am given is the ability to use my voice for the voiceless. Often people feel they are championing different causes, but in all of them I see commonality: fighting injustice and denying that one type of person or species has the right to exploit another.”
He said, “I think we’ve become very detached from the natural world.” The actor spoke about his conviction as a vegan, thinking about using love and compassion as life’s guiding lights for all sentient beings and for the earth.
He said, “I have sometimes been cruel, hard to work with, and I am thankful that so many of you in this space has given me a second chance. I ask everyone to lead each other to salvation.” Phoenix concluded his Oscar-winning speech by referencing his brother and saying, “Run to the rescue with love and peace.”
Renee Zellweger, who won Judy’s Best Actress award, was emotional on stage. The actress praised her hero Judy Garland and said, “This past year of discussions between generations and cultures honoring Judy Garland has been a really cool reminder that our heroes unite us.”
She added, “Judy Garland did not receive this distinction in her time. I am confident that this moment is an extension of the celebration of her legacy that started on our film set and is also symbolic of the fact that her legacy of unparalleled exceptionalism and inclusiveness and generosity of spirit transcends any one artistic achievement.
At the 92nd Academy Awards 2020, awards were revealed several minutes before the primary, and more coveted, it was time for the Best International Feature Film Trophy. There was absolutely no doubt that this one will fly away from Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite. And they did.
But when this South Korean movie walked away with four awards from the six categories in which it was nominated, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture, it may take a moment to let it all sink in. This is Oscar history-Best Picture was won for the first time by a non-English film.
