President Kovind rejects mercy petition of convict Akshay Thakur

President Ram Nath Kovind rejected Akshay Singh Thakur’s mercy appeal, one of the convicts of rape and murder in the Nirbhaya gang, sources said. Akshay Thakur had Saturday filed the plea for mercy.

The president turned down Singh’s plea for mercy, an official said.

The president has thus far denied three of the four convicts ‘ demands for mercy. President Ram Nath Kovind had previously rejected the mercy petitions of the Mukesh and Vinay convicts in the Nirbhaya trial. Just Pawan Gupta is left to file a plea for mercy in the case.

The convicted prime, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself up in Tihar prison days after the trial began. The juvenile, said to be the most violent of the perpetrators, has been held in a three-year correctional facility.

In 2015, he was released and sent to an undisclosed location amid concerns about a life threat. The criminal was 20 years old, when he was shot.
